Undergraduate Licensure Programs


Biology, Grades 6-12

A person interested in teaching Biology at the high school or middle school level should major in biology with a concentration in Secondary Education. This degree and concentration leads to state licensure to teach in Virginia upon completion of the degree. Chemistry, Grades 6 - 12

Students interested in teaching Chemistry at the high school or middle school level should major in chemistry with a concentration in Secondary Education. This degree is approved by the American Chemical Society and leads to state licensure to teach in Virginia upon completion of the degree. Dance, PK - 12

This highly selective Dance, PK - 12 program is approved by the Virginia State Department of Education and administered through the College of Education and Human Development, which is accredited by the National Council for the Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE). To be considered for licensure in dance education, a student must successfully complete the requirements for a BA or BFA in dance. Students must be formally accepted into the program by the Dance Education Committee. Earth Science, 6 - 12

Students interested in teaching Earth Science at the high school or middle school level should major in earth science with a concentration in Secondary Education. English

A person interested in teaching English at the high school or middle school level should major in English with a minor in Secondary Education. This degree and emphasis leads to state licensure to teach in Virginia upon completion of the degree. Mathematics, 6 - 12

If you are interested in teaching Mathematics at the high school or middle school level you should major in mathematics with a concentration in Secondary Education. This degree and concentration leads to state licensure to teach in Virginia upon completion of the degree. Music, PK - 12


The Music, PK - 12 concentration is accredited by the Virginia State Department of Education and administered through the College of Education and Human Development, which is accredited by the National Council for the Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE). Minimum scores on the Praxis I and II tests must be achieved before state licensure is granted. Students must be formally accepted into the music education concentration by the department’s Music Teacher Education Committee.


Physical Education, PK - 12

The Health and Physical Education program has been in existence for several decades and is highly respected by students at Mason and teachers in the field. It prepares undergraduate students for licensure in the teaching profession of health and physical education at the elementary, middle and high school grades. The program is accredited by the Virginia’s Department of Education and the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education.
