Required Tests
PRAXIS I:
Current Praxis I requirements for approved CEHD teacher preparation programs
- Students applying for admission: Pass Praxis I with combined score of 532 (or meet ACT/SAT equivalent)
- Students may possibly be admitted provisionally: Praxis I scores between 525 - 532
- All students applying for student teaching/internship: Pass Praxis I before final internship
SUBSTITUTE TESTS FOR PRAXIS I:
SAT as a Substitute for Praxis I
Please note that the SAT was approved as a substitute test only for Praxis I; individuals also must meet the Praxis II (subject area assessment) in order to begin an internship/student teaching assignment.
- SAT Taken Prior to April 1, 1995: A score of 1000 with at least 450 on the verbal and 510 on the mathematics tests
- SAT Taken After April 1, 1995: A score of 1100 with at least 530 on the verbal and 530 on the mathematics tests
ACT as a Substitute for Praxis I
Please note that the SAT was approved as a substitute test only for Praxis I; individuals also must meet the Praxis II (subject area assessment) in order to begin an internship or student teaching assignment.- ACT Taken Prior to April 1, 1995: A composite score of 21, with the ACT mathematics score of no less than 21, and an ACT English Plus Reading score of no less than 37.
- ACT Taken After April 1, 1995: A composite score of 24, with the ACT mathematics score of no less than 22, and an ACT English Plus Reading score of no less than 46.
VIRGINIA READING ASSESSMENT (VRA):
This test is required for individuals seeking a teaching endorsement in Early/Primary PK-3, Elementary Education PK-6, or Special Education.
VIRGINIA COMMUNICATION AND LITERACY ASSESSMENT (VCLA):
The Virginia Communication and Literacy Assessment is required for initial licensure. The cut scores for the VCLA are as follows:
- Writing Sub Test: 235
- Reading Sub Test: 235
- Composite Score: 470
PRAXIS II: SPECIALTY AREA TESTS
The following tests are required for the endorsement (teaching specialty) areas indicated. Students must pass the Praxis II before their final internship.
