English with a Minor in Secondary Education, Undergraduate Program

Students apply to the College of Education and Human Development for the program after completing 21 credits in courses for the English major, including English 325. In order to qualify for this program, students must have a minimum 3.3 GPA in those courses. To advance to the state-required internship students must also have a 3.3. GPA in their English major courses (a student whose GPA falls below 3.3 in the major may take more courses in English to raise his or her GPA to the required level).

While students apply when they are already English majors, they should begin planning their schedules to accommodate the required coursework as soon as possible, ideally in their freshman year. The sample schedule below provides an example of a course of studies that will allow students to complete the English major and the Virginia licensure/English education minor in 8 semesters. However, this is only a guide; not every student's schedule will look just like this.

Students may also elect only to take their education courses as undergraduates, and complete their internship after receiving the B.A.

Because students pursuing the combined program will take their Education courses as undergraduates, these courses will not count toward an M.A. in education. Students who think they might one day pursue this degree should discuss the advantages or disadvantages of the combined program with an advisor in the College of Education and Human Development.
